Amigurumi bunny, 16 cm with ears

How do I crochet an amigurumi bunny whose ears stand up?

Hook
3.0 mm
Yarn
DK (#3) in two colours, approx. 45 g total
Gauge
24 sc and 26 rounds = 10 cm in a spiral
Finished
16 cm tall with ears, 14 cm wide at the feet

Head, body, two ears, two arms and two feet, all in one DK weight and one 3.0 mm hook. The trick is the ear and the hidden neck: the head and body are joined with no visible seam.

Materials

  • 30 g main colour DK, 15 g contrast
  • 3.0 mm hook
  • Two 6 mm safety eyes
  • Stitch marker
  • Blunt tapestry needle
  • About 40 g polyester stuffing
  • Small amount of pink embroidery floss for the nose

Abbreviations

  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in one stitch
  • dec = invisible decrease
  • MR = magic ring
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FLO = front loop only
Nineteen rings for head and body as one piece: the ring where the count holds at 18 is the neck, and there is no seam there.

Round by round

Open any round to read what happens in it.

R1 · 6 sts

HEAD. MR, 6 sc.

R2 · 12 stsinc

inc around.

R3 · 18 stsinc

(1 sc, inc) six times.

R4 · 24 stsinc

(2 sc, inc) six times.

R5 · 30 stsinc

inc, 3 sc, then (inc, 3 sc) five times, 2 sc.

R6 · 30 sts

Plain. Place the safety eyes between rounds 4 and 5, 7 stitches apart.

R7 · 30 sts

Plain. Stuff the head to 90% before round 11.

R8 · 30 sts

Plain.

R9 · 30 sts

Plain. Embroider the nose in a 3-stitch triangle just below the eyes.

R10 · 24 stsdec

(3 sc, dec) six times.

R11 · 18 stsdec

(1 sc, dec) six times. Do not close — this opening becomes the neck.

R12 · 18 sts

BODY. Continue straight from the head, still in the same spiral: 18 sc.

R13 · 24 stsinc

(2 sc, inc) six times.

R14 · 30 stsinc

(3 sc, inc) six times.

R15 · 30 sts

Plain.

R16 · 30 sts

Plain. Stuff the body through the base as you go.

R17 · 24 stsdec

(3 sc, dec) six times.

R18 · 18 stsdec

(1 sc, dec) six times. Stuff to 90%.

R19 · 12 stsdec

(dec) six times. Gather the 12 front loops and pull closed.

R20 · 6 sts

EAR (make 2). MR, 6 sc. Rounds 21-27: plain 6 sc each round, no increases. The ear is deliberately flat.

R21 · 6 sts

Stuff only the bottom third of the ear. Fold flat and sc the last round closed through both layers (3 sc).

R22 · 6 sts

ARM (make 2). MR, 6 sc. Five plain rounds. Change to contrast colour, two plain rounds for the paw, then gather closed.

Finishing

  1. Pin the ears to the head before sewing. They go 6 rounds above the eyes and 4 stitches apart, angled 15 degrees outward.
  2. Photograph the pinned head from the front, check the photo, and only then sew — ears are the single most common lopsided feature on a bunny.
  3. Sew arms 2 rounds below the neck line, 5 stitches apart, each attached round a full circle of 14 stitches.
  4. Embroider the nose last, after the head is stuffed and closed, so the stuffing supports the stitches.

If it goes wrong

The ears flop forward.

They are over-stuffed. Remove the stuffing from the top two thirds; a flat ear holds its angle because there is nothing to bend it.

There is a visible waist where the head meets the body.

You joined a finished head to a finished body. This pattern works them as one continuous spiral for exactly that reason.

The head is egg-shaped.

Add two plain rounds at round 8 and remove one decrease from round 10. Egg heads come from too few plain rounds.
