Plain amigurumi ball, 7 cm

How do I crochet a plain amigurumi ball that comes out round?

Hook
3.5 mm
Yarn
DK / light worsted (#3), approx. 25 g
Gauge
22 sc and 24 rounds = 10 cm, worked in a spiral
Finished
7 cm diameter, 7.5 cm tall

This is the reference shape every other amigurumi piece is a variation on. Worked in DK on a 3.5 mm hook it finishes at 7 cm across and takes about 40 minutes.

Materials

  • 25 g DK acrylic or cotton-acrylic
  • 3.5 mm hook
  • Stitch marker
  • Blunt tapestry needle
  • About 15 g polyester stuffing

Abbreviations

  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = 2 sc in the same stitch
  • dec = invisible decrease through front loops
  • MR = magic ring
  • ( ) = repeat the group
Eleven rings: three increase rounds out, four flat, three decrease rounds in. The flat middle is what makes it a ball.

Round by round

Open any round to read what happens in it.

R1 · 6 sts

6 sc in a magic ring. Pull the ring closed before starting round 2.

R2 · 12 stsinc

inc in each stitch around (6 inc).

R3 · 18 stsinc

(1 sc, inc) six times.

R4 · 24 stsinc

inc, 2 sc, then (inc, 2 sc) five times, 1 sc. The split keeps the increases off the round-3 spokes.

R5 · 30 stsinc

(3 sc, inc) five times, then 3 sc.

R6 · 30 sts

Plain round. This is the widest point; the ball is 7 cm across from here.

R7 · 30 sts

Plain round.

R8 · 30 sts

Plain round. Stuff to about 60% firmness before round 10.

R9 · 30 sts

Plain round. Top up the stuffing to 90%.

R10 · 24 stsdec

(3 sc, dec) five times, then 3 sc.

R11 · 18 stsdec

(2 sc, dec) five times, then 2 sc.

R12 · 12 stsdec

(1 sc, dec) four times. Stop here — do not go on to 6 stitches.

R13 · 12 sts

Gather: run the tail under the front loop of all 12 stitches, pull closed, and take the needle through the centre into the stuffing.

Finishing

  1. Weave the starting tail through three stitch posts in two directions to secure the magic ring.
  2. Roll the finished ball between your palms for 20 seconds to even out the stuffing.
  3. If the surface looks uneven, mist very lightly and reshape by hand; do not soak a stuffed ball.

If it goes wrong

The ball is taller than it is wide.

Your rows are shorter than 24 per 10 cm. Add one more plain round at round 7 and remove one from each decrease section, or go half a hook size up.

Six ridges are visible running down the ball.

The increases were not staggered. Undo back to round 4 and use the split version given there.

Stuffing shows between stitches.

The fabric is too loose. Go down to 3.0 mm and re-swatch; an empty ball should be opaque held up to a window.
